How messy are we?

When going out..

I wondered what people's thoughts were in relation going out and what you do with your rubbish.

Recently I listened to a talkback show where a guy complained about how disgusting people where. How 'pig-like' they were in leaving behind a mess when at a movie theatre. He complained of popcorn, empty wrappers and containers all left behind (especially since he had to wait to get into the theatre before hand because the ushers had to clean up from the last lot.) I have to admit, I thought the same too as I'm walked out of the theater carting my rubbish in my pockets and see the floor strewn with leftovers but did this take away from the whole movie going experience? Well for me, no. Mostly because I was too busy watching the movie to notice the 'flingings' of other theatre goers. Am I too blind?

I suppose the arguement in terms of said 'flinging' is that, well its the staff job to clean up after you and well if you're out and about and you drop this here and drop that there, who really cares? Someone's employed to pick it up.

Ahhh, but try to pull that crap at home and what do you get? Your spouse harping at you saying 'if you were out in public would you do that? No, I don't think so!'..oh little do they know of your proclivities to 'rubbish flinging'.

How difficult is it..?

So I have to wonder.. just how difficult is it to take that empty popcorn container with you.. how hard is it to carry that tray of McDonalds leftovers to that bin just by the door as you leave?

I'd be interested in getting some commentary on who does what in this situation. I wonder are the women more conscious than men? Does age have anything to do with it? The younger you are.. the less likely you'll cart your crap out. Is it nature vs nurture.. are you just too damn lazy or was it ingrained in you to be mindful of your leavings?

Let me know..

Yeah, I'm well aware there are more pressing matters in life to be concerned about but hey.. I never said I was prolific or profound. I have a quirky nature and a tendency to look at the oddest things for the weirdest reasons for the most fleeting-ist of times..

and so I ask you to indulge me this once.. okay, it's likely I'll ask you to indulge me often but please, I'd like to hear what you have to say..

I agree Tari, it seems iin public people tend to forget we are still responsible for what we mess up. I tend to be cleaner in public and mess up at home. LOL great hub, and welcome to hub pages, you're off to a great start...keep writing!! I like "the attitude!!"

I throw the stuff in my hands away when I'm at a theater (my soda cup or whatever I put in the cup holder), but confess to putting the popcorn thing down on the floor and generally never thinking about it again.

The theater doesn't bother me though, because the DO have people cleaning up between movies. The one that pisses me off is the cafeteria/fast food restaurant people who leave all their crap on the tables when there isn't anyone going through. Granted, some have employees policing the place, but in more and more frequently, particularly in fast food, there just isn't anyone doing that anymore. Or the kids who are supposed to be doing it are slackers with the 2000s entitlement and "you owe me respect" attitude that has gutted anything approaching good service anymore. So people who leave their trash on tables is worse imo.

marisue... it seems thats just what we do.. forget the responsibilities of the little things. I have to admit.. I'm slobbier at home than I am in public.. I mean for crying out loud.. its home.. you're own place.. if you can't drop crap in public.. where can you drop it? Only draw back.. there is no one employed to pick up after you.. sigh.. vicious circle!

Shades: yeah I noticed that guys are the main culprits in a theatre.. well, them and kids. I see g/fs or wives & mothers grizzle and pick up after them. I hate when I go to a family restaurant and there's leftovers on tables too.. that just irks me to no end. First thought is always.. 'why didn't they just toss it in the bin?', next is.. 'where are the staff to clean this crap up?'.. What's funny though is watchign someone take a tray of rubbish and put it on the table next to the one they want to use.. when the bin is like 2 feet away.. its just weird. I remember my daughter in McDonalds once saw a group of teenagers get up and leave their table messy.. she piped up in her girly squeaky voice 'MUM.. THOSE KIDS HAVENT CLEANED'ED UP'.. I smiled at her and just said.. 'thats right hon' all the while eyeballing these kids. Two of the girls red as a beetroot cleaned the table. And when they finished, my daughter piped up again 'MUM, THEY'RE GOOD GIRLS AYE??'.. (seriously my daughter spoke 'yelling'  at age 3).. All I could answer was.. 'yes hun. .they're good girls'.. and the girls beamed at my daughter. A small victory there I think.. lol..
